Prospective grad students show high level of interest in CSE

On March 14 – 16, 54 prospective graduate students from around the world – a number reached only once before, in 2011– were invited to CSE to engage with faculty, current graduate students, and recent alumni to learn about the Graduate Program in Computer Science and Engineering at the University of Michigan.

The agenda for the visit in part included a plenary session of presentations by faculty, the graduate student organization president, and the CSE chair, followed by a graduate student and recent alumni panel discussion, a lively poster session, faculty research presentations, meetings with faculty, and introductions to the division’s labs in Advanced Computer Architecture, Artificial Intelligence, Software Systems, Interactive Systems, and Theory.

These sessions were followed up with a walking tour of campus, social activities, and a CSE Mini-Symposium with sessions on “The Future of Parallel Architectures: How Much Parallelism Can We Really Use?,” “CSE Saves the World,” and “From Small Data to Big Data.”

Response to the visit was exceedingly positive, with one attendee remarking, “I’ve really enjoyed visiting and feel good about the program here. The people are great and the research opportunities are fascinating.” The Division looks forward to welcoming a record number of new graduate students to our program this fall.
