Towards Pervasive Assistance: The Intel Science and Technology Center for Pervasive Computing

This talk will provide an overview of the Intel Science and
Technology Center for Pervasive Computing (ISTC-PC) and will highlight
some of the research that will help drive the next generation of pervasive
and ubiquitous computing. For the past 20 years, the pervasive and
ubiquitous computing community has developed technology that allows
sensing, computing, and wireless communication to be embedded in
everyday objects, enabling a range of context-aware applications. These
apps and technologies embedded in our everyday life are changing the
way people are experiencing computing but even more is possible. Future
systems will support applications that have much deeper awareness of
users and their activities, context, and goals and will be able to learn and
adapt continuously to user’s habits, routines, and preferences. Come hear
how the Intel Science and Technology Center for Pervasive Computing
(ISTC-PC) is helping to instantiate this vision.
Mark Abel is the Director for the Intel Science and Technology
Center for Pervasive Computing (ISTC-PC) based at the University of
Washington where he is also an Affiliate Professor of Computer Science
and Engineering. Prior to his role in the ISTC-PC, Mark was a longtime Lab
Director and General Manager at Intel. Mr. Abel’s labs teams have won or
shared Intel’s highest honor, the Intel Achievement Award, seven times for
the creation of new technologies and new businesses for Intel including
the invention and delivery of technologies that have shipped in over a
billion Personal Computers. His teams have also twice won Argentina’s
highest technical award, the Sadosky Award.

Prior to joining Intel, Mr. Abel held research and leadership positions with
Bell Labs, Xerox PARC, U S WEST Advanced Technologies and Siemens. Mr.
Abel has an MS degree in Electrical Engineering from Stanford University
and a BSE degree in Electrical Engineering from the University of Michigan.
Mark was the 2011 recipient of the University of Michigan’s College of
Engineering distinguished alumni award, the Engineering Alumni Merit
Award, in Computer Science and Engineering.
