Music Information Retrieval draws upon a variety of disciplines to address basic questions related to music as a source of information. "name that tune" is a famous example that has generated much attention in the MIR community. Other "naming problems" exist, however, such as singer identification and style classification. This talk presents an overview of the MIR field, reviews several approaches that are being taken to address these naming problems, and summarizes the work of my students and colleagues.
