Development of High Volume MEMS Products (Or Tales from the Advanced Development Group at Analog Devices’ Micromachined Products Division)

This talk will chronicle some of Jason’s experiences working in the Advanced Development Group at Analog Devices over the last 15 years as well as some of the current engineering needs of MEMS companies today. In particular, the talk will describe ADI’s new inertial sensor process that integrates 10 µm-thick SOI-based MEMS sensors with 0.6 µm CMOS in an inexpensive process capable of being run in high volume. This will be followed by a chronicle of the development of a MEMS Microphone for high volume consumer applications. Interspersed within these will be some stories about working in MEMS for the last 15 years, as well as some lessons learned over the years and some tips for successful MEMS development. Finally, a quick summary of activities at MEMStaff Inc. will be discussed including a quick overview of the MEMS industry from MEMStaff’s perspective and what small startup to large MEMS companies are looking for in engineers today.
Jason Weigold received his B.S.E.E. from the University of California at Los Angeles (UCLA) in 1995, and his M.S.E.E. and Ph.D. from the University of Michigan in 1997 and 2000, respectively. He joined the Advanced Development group at Analog Devices’ Micromachined Products Division and has worked at their sites in Wilmington, MA, Cambridge, MA and Limerick, Ireland on a variety of MEMS devices and products in areas from Design, Layout, and Fabrication to Characterization, Packaging, Testing, and Reliability. He left Analog Devices in 2006, to found MEMStaff, Inc. where he works today.
