Data-Driven Democracy Hackathon

Please note: This is an in-person event. The hackathon takes place on Saturday, March 22 from 10:00am – 7:00pm. An awards event will take place on Sunday, March 23, from 11:00am – 1:00pm.

Students, bring your friends to this all-day event to build an interactive website that provides people with data-driven insights relevant to democracy!

Learn about some of the problems facing participation in democracy today and work to solve them with data-driven technology. Sunday’s awards ceremony will honor the top 3 teams with prizes of $500.

The event will have tutorials on:

  • Web scraping and data collection
  • Data visualization using Streamlit and Altair
  • Publishing dashboards and version control

FAQs

Q: Do I need any prior knowledge?

A: A basic understanding of Python (like from EECS 280 or SI 206) would be great, but participants of all levels are welcome to come and team up with technologists!

Q: Will there be food?

A: Yes! We will be providing breakfast, lunch, and dinner.

Q: How will prizes be awarded?

A: The top three teams will each be awarded $500. Prizes will be awarded based on the following criteria:

  • Novelty of idea
  • Implementation of idea
  • Potential impact of idea on advancing democracy

Q: What should I bring?

A: Please bring a laptop, positive attitude, and appetite to learn.
