Antennas For Mobile Communication Devices

The demand for multiband functionality combined with shrinking form factor volumes present a significant challenge for antenna design.

This presentation will discuss the issues associated with antenna design, specifically for handheld communication devices. Several design approaches used in existing products will be described. Ideas that have been explored in research activities will also be presented. Finally, areas of research for future work will be suggested.

John Svigelj received the BSEE degree with High Honors from Michigan State University, East Lansing, in 1990, and the MSEE and PhD degrees from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, in 1992 and 1995, respectively. From 1995 to 1997 he was with Texas Instruments, McKinney, TX, where he designed phased array and personal communication system antennas. From 1997 to 1999 he was with SAIC-DEMACO in Champaign, IL, where he conducted research in the area of high frequency techniques, including the use of SBR and scattering centers for predicting RCS and SAR imagery. Since 1999 he has been with Motorola in Schaumburg, IL, where his interests include antenna design and EM modeling techniques.
